Video 5: Objectives

Objectives

This section will provide you with an overview of Objectives.

Objectives are the larger building blocks that need to be achieved to reach the project goal and improve the current community condition. ANA permits a maximum of three project objectives for the entire project period. The format for ANA’s objectives are: a Timeline, description of what will be completed; a Description of what will be completed; and a Measurable amount of change expected by the end of the project. ANA limits the number of objectives to encourage projects that are manageable within the allotted project period. You may find that you only need one objective for your project while others may need all three. Objectives can operate sequentially, where the second objective is dependent upon completing the first. Or they can operate concurrently, where activities for one objective are started around the same time as another.

  • Hello and welcome to the 2025 ANA Pre-Application Training, Objectives. The next element in the NOFO you'll be responding to is element three: Objectives. It states identifies no more than three project objectives that describe measurable achievements relevant to the project goal within a given time frame. ANA allows for up to three objectives that are specific to your project design. There are achievements needed to reach the project goal and reduce or improve the current community condition. These are time-limited target measures that show your progress. They're individualized, specific, relevant and achievable. Although you can have multiple objectives, it might be a good idea not to have too many. Otherwise, you might find yourself spending most of your time collecting data and not administering the program.
  • Each objective must include the following, a timeline for when the objective will be completed, expressed in project years, a description of what will be completed and a measurable amount of change expected by the end of the project. Here's an example of a SEDS project objective. By the end of 36 months, nine three-per-year, Native Village of Shallow Creek tribal members of employable age 18 to 30 will receive poultry farm training and obtain five industry approved certifications annually. You'll see by this statement that the objective will be completed within the three-year project. The brief description specifies that nine tribal members of employable age, and it specifies their ages, will receive poultry farm training and obtain certifications annually and that it's measurable. We can assess and monitor the number of industry approved certifications to ensure that we're on track with implementation of the project.
  • Here's an example of a SEDS-AK project. By the end of 36 months, the Alaska Inland Tribe will develop a community-driven comprehensive development plan with five critical sectors. Again, you can see that it has all of the required components for an ANA objective.
  • For this activity, we're going to start off by writing down your project goal again and then we'll have you determine how many project years the objective will take and also identify how many objectives do you think will be needed for your project. Discuss and explain what's going to be accomplished for each objective. This is where you'll be providing that description in your statement and then how much change do you expect in each objective and how will you measure that change. This is the measurement component that will allow you to monitor and assess throughout the project. And then finalize your objective statement and ensure that it has all three of those components.
