Video 3: Current Community Condition

Current Community Condition

This section will provide you with an overview of the Current Community Condition.

The current community condition is a constraint that prevents the community from achieving the strategic goal of the tribe or organization. While there are probably many conditions the community can identify that stand in your way of the strategic goal of the tribe or organization, your application should identify one specific condition. The project should measurably reduce or eliminate the condition and bring the community closer to obtaining your strategic goal.

  • Hello, and welcome to the 2025 ANA pre-application training, Current Community Condition. The current community condition is the first element that you'll respond to in the NOFO. Element one states, "Identifies one current community condition to be addressed by the project." When you're responding to this section, you'll start off by identifying in a one-sentence statement what your current community condition is. The current community condition is the most significant barrier that your community is encountering, that you're wanting to address through minimizing, reducing, or eliminating through your project. When you're making this statement, it'll be one sentence in length. It'll be at the top of the section. And I encourage you to really have it stand out. Bold this statement, italicize it, really have it highlighted for the reader that this is the one condition that your project will be addressing. In the statement, you'll also contain a measure of the current condition and try to avoid a lack for or need for statement. We'll talk about this in just a moment. Also in the statement include recent data.
  • When you're making your current community condition, you're not informing the reader what you're lacking in your community or what you need, you're citing exactly what the issue is you're wanting to overcome. So for example, instead of saying that we need more jobs or we lack jobs in our community, you'll be specifying what the unemployment rate is. In this example, it's indicating that the community experiences a 23% unemployment rate, which is more than two times the state average. Here's an example of a current community condition statement. "The native village of Shallow Creek has food cost on average 35% higher than urban communities in the state of Alaska." In this statement, it's relevant to your community, you are indicating a figure obtained through data, and also you're stirring emotion for the reader.
  • Following the current community condition statement, you'll be providing narrative supporting that statement. You'll discuss surveys or statistics that were utilized in that statement. You'll link it to your current community condition. We really recommend not using data older than five years, and so if your data is older than that, we recommend researching and finding other data that can be used for that figure. Also, try to utilize local data when possible. That way it makes it more relevant to your project and your community. Also, when you're talking about your current community condition, you'll want to identify your target population, provide geographic and demographic information, and then social and economic and other factors.
  • Here's an example of a narrative supporting a current community condition statement. You'll see in this statement they're identifying the food prices in their community. They're referencing it to other communities and making the comparison. They're talking about how this challenge impacts their community, so they're really stirring emotion with the reader and getting them invested in their project and understanding the need and importance for this project. So the activity for the current community condition walks you through building not only your statement, but that supporting narrative. I'd like it if you could start off by identifying what's the biggest challenge your community faces right now that your project's going to address. And then also you'll want to include data or evidence showing the extent or severity of this condition. So utilize that data that you found in those other sources to support this statement, and then also provide information on how your project will improve, reduce, or eliminate the challenge. What's the impact that you're wanting to create through your project to help you address this current community condition?
