Video 2: Project Introduction

Project Introduction

This section will provide you with an overview of your Project Introduction.

When introducing your project, you will share where you are physically located and the location(s) of where the project will be implemented, unique characteristics of your community/communities, and other helpful and unique information that will inform the reader of who you are as a community.

The introduction may also contain information regarding previously funded ANA projects and a detailed account of the outcomes for these projects.

  • Hello and welcome to the 2025 ANA Pre-Application Training, Project Introduction. Your project introduction will be the first part of your project narrative, and this is where you'll set the tone for the rest of your application. You'll start off by talking about where you located in the State of Alaska. You'll provide information about other hubs. You can show a small map in this portion, and really the goal is to inform the reader of where are you located and where your community is at as they may not be familiar with the state. You'll continue on discussing some unique identifiers. Your unique identifiers are things and information that are very specific to your community. One example of this could be that you're located off the road system so that your community may have higher shipping cost or travel cost associated with it, and this could help connect to other parts of your application and really justify some of those expenses or challenges. You'll also share demographic information about the community as a whole. You'll talk about population numbers, age ranges, other helpful information that can help inform the reader.
  • Lastly, to complete this section, you'll want to talk about any previously funded ANA projects. You'll talk about the success of those projects, and you'll really want to emphasize the difference between those projects and the current project that you're wanting to get funded. If you have not previously been funded by an ANA project before, you'll want to indicate that in the section to let them know that you haven't received funding in the past.
  • Here's an example of what an introduction could look like in an application. Here you'll see that they are providing distances from other regional hubs. They're discussing geographic landmarks and things that are very unique to their community. They're also touching on some of the challenges associated with being off the road system, and they're talking about limitations with barges, higher cost of shipping and weather impacts to the community. Lastly, you'll see that they say that they were previously awarded an ANA SEDS opportunity and that they successfully completed a capacity building project with administrative training involved. The current project will be workforce development and focused on a different population, so they really do a good job differentiating that here.
  • To help you build your project introduction, we have a very brief activity that you can utilize. In this activity, we would like you to fill out where are you located within the State of Alaska, providing that information to inform the reader. You'll indicate any project sites that you plan on using for your project such as a school or a tribal hall or community center. You'll provide demographic information about the tribe or organization and those unique identifiers we mentioned earlier. And then lastly, you'll talk about any previously funded ANA projects. As a reminder, in your introduction, really frame this for readers who may not be familiar with the State of Alaska.
