Video 11: Data Management Plan

Data Management Plan

This section will provide you with an overview of the DataManagement Plan.

The Data Management Plan details the strategy for monitoring and reporting progress on objectives - how data will be collected and analyzed through out the duration of your project. It will also define who will be responsible for data collection, storage, management and reporting. Having a sound data management plan will be important for monitoring progress and make informed adjustments as necessary.

  • Hello and welcome to the 2025 ANA Pre-Application Training, Data Management Plan. In the NOFO, there are two elements regarding your data management plan. One asks you for the overall strategy for using data to monitor and report progress towards project objectives. Element 14 ask you to identify the staff who are going to be responsible for collecting the data, what tools they're going to use, storing the data, and then the overall management. For a comprehensive data management plan, you'll start by identifying what kinds of data you're going to be collecting with your project. This includes how often you're going to be collecting the data, what that data is specifically, and then also what tools you're going to use to track that data.
  • This can be in-house in a database, or it can be in the cloud in an electronic data system. Also, for tools, isn't just the storage, but you will also include what different tools that you're going to use to collect that data. So it could look like surveys, observation reports, assessments, whatever you implement to collect data, you'll speak to that in this section. Also included in your data management plan is the evaluation of the data. How are you reviewing the data that you're collecting and assessing it and monitoring it throughout your project? Lastly, you'll include how you report this data. Is it internally? Is it to stakeholders? How often does this take place? Include all of this information in your data management plan.
  • Also in the data management plan is identifying staff responsible for the collecting and storage and reporting of your data. Identify any staff members who are going to be involved with data for your project and include their qualifications and ability to work in that capacity. Should you be using a consultant or a third party, include a statement or work or an outline of your partnership in a formal arrangement. With that said, also be sure to include verbiage that you own the data that's going to be collected in your project. You want to avoid having to pay for data or having any issues accessing it. The data's yours, it's your project, you should be able to collect that and have that data whenever needed. So please outline that in your contract, in your agreement. Also include the qualifications of your consultants, and lastly, who's going to manage this consultant? Who's going to be their point of contact and oversee their work for your project? Include information pertaining to that. Should you be using a third party?
  • Okay, so here's an example of a possible data management plan section. In here you'll see that they identify what data is being collected and where it's taking place. So here it occurs on site. It's being facilitated by the production facility manager. It includes the data that they're going to be accessing, also how they're inputting that data, and it appears to be an internal Excel tracking document, so they speak to that here. Also, they say that data will be secured storely on the Tribe's cloud server and accessible to the Tribal Administrator and Tribal Council. Lastly, the project director saves and analyzes the data and provides quarterly progress reports to the Tribal Council. So they're indicating how often and to whom they're reporting this data and these findings.
